Woodlawn Playground Renovation Updates

Spray shower will be closed Wednesday, September 2 and Thursday, September 3 for asphalt paving.
As of 8/21/2026
The contractor will be installing asphalt in the surrounding area. For safety, the spray shower will be closed while this work is being performed.
Thank you for your patience and understanding while these improvements are completed.
As of 8/19/26
The restroom electrical box will be replaced. During this work, there will be a temporary power outage, and the spray shower will be closed.
As of 7/27/26
Spray shower will be closed on 7/29.
It will reopen on 7/30.
7/24/26
There will be a delay in opening Woodlawn sprinkler area due to pouring of concrete.
It should open around noon.

Handball and basketball court closed until 3pm (tree work)

The spray showers will be open beginning July, 1, 2026 at 8am. As of now, there are no closures scheduled.
Basketball court and handball courts are open.

Estimated reopening of the spray shower is the week of June 28.
Basketball court and handball court will be closed while fence work is done. Both courts will reopen for the summer as soon as possible.

We are excited to share an important update regarding the upcoming reconstruction of Woodlawn Playground.
As you know, this summer, Woodlawn Playground will undergo a much-needed renovation that will bring significant improvements to this beloved community space.
We are happy to share that NYC Parks has worked closely with the project team and contractor to phase construction so that the existing spray shower can remain available for public use throughout much of the summer.
To safely separate the construction area from the spray shower, approximately two weeks will be needed at the start of the project (approximately the week of June 15) to install protective fencing before the spray shower can reopen.
To expedite construction and allow amenities to reopen as quickly as possible, the basketball court area will be temporarily closed for approximately four weeks while the contractor completes fence replacement work in that section. Once this work is completed, the area will be reopened to the public (approximately the week of July 13).
While NYC Parks is making every effort to maintain access, there will be intermittent closures throughout the project as construction progresses.
VCPA is committed to keeping the community informed every step of the way and will provide regular updates throughout the duration of the project to the extent NYC Parks keeps us informed.
