The Friends of Van Cortlandt Park maintain many of the hiking trails within Van Cortlandt Park. Through our summer internship for high school students and Volunteer Trails Crew, we have been able to successfully improve many of the trails within Van Cortlandt Park. Currently we are working alongside the Department of Parks and Recreation to improve upon the existing trails to create a more sustainable trails system for park users.
Want to develop skills in trail maintenance and trail building while making a significant contribution to the future of Van Cortlandt Park and the Bronx Community? Crew Members will attend trail building workshops developing skills in various areas of trail construction while improving the hiking trails of Van Cortlandt Park. Projects include but are not limited to building boardwalks, clearing waterbars and drainage swells and decreasing forest fragmentation through the closure of unwanted desire trails. The crew meets on a monthly basis from March-December with added days included if needed.
