Bimonthly Wednesdays meeting at 9am

Tibbetts Brook Clean-Up
Saturday March 23rd meeting at 10am
The Friends and VCPC are celebrating World Water Day a day late by cleaning up Tibbetts Brook and the riparian zone that surrounds it.  Meet at our storage container in the “free lot” of the Van Cortlandt Golf House to grab some waders and supplies before heading out to clean up Tibbetts.  Advance registration is appreciated.

Volunteer Trails Restoration Crew
Saturdays April 6th, May 4th and June 1st from 10am to 3pm

Crew Members will work alongside trails professionals, developing skills in various areas of trail construction while improving the trails in Van Cortlandt Park.  Projects include building boardwalks, clearing waterbars and drainage swells and installing drainage dips.  No prior trails experience is necessary; all training will be offered in an on-the-job format.  Interested? Forestry/ Canopy Gap Volunteer Events
Saturdays April 13th, May 11th and June 8th from 10am to 1pm
The Friends are partnering with the Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy (VCPC) with the support of a NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Urban and Community Forestry Grant to complete forest restoration projects to close canopy gaps in Van Cortlandt Park forests.  Meet at the Garden & Compost Site – enter the Park at Broadway and Mosholu Avenue.

Natural History Hikes
Wednesdays April 17th, May 15th and June 12th from 6pm to 8pm
Join Friends’ Environmental Educator, Alex, for a hike while discussing topics ranging from the ecology of organisms to whole ecosystems using Van Cortlandt Park as our laboratory. Local scientists will join as guest presenters. Visit vancortlandt.org for more information and meeting locations.

Spring Trail Clean Up for Earth Day
Saturday April 20th meeting at 10am
Celebrate Earth Day a few days early by helping the Friends and VCP Conservancy clean the trails in Van Cortlandt Park.  Armed with grabbers and garbage bags, we will spread out in small groups throughout the trails of the Park to do some spring cleaning.  Meet at the Garden & Compost Site – enter the Park at Broadway and Mosholu Avenue.

Spring Wetland Volunteers Days
Saturdays April 27th, May 25th and June 22nd from 10am to 1pm
Did you know there are only 97 acres of freshwater wetlands left in the Bronx and 56 of them are in Van Cortlandt Park? Volunteers will help with native species planting, removal of non-native invasive plants and trash clean up within Tibbetts Wetlands. Meet in front of the Nature Center, enter the Park at Broadway and W. 246th Street.

W. 261st Entrance Beautification Days
Saturdays April 27th and June 8th from 10am to 12pm
Volunteers are needed as we continue to work to improve the entrance to Van Cortlandt Park near W. 261st Street.  Projects will include weeding and watering the new garden, cleaning up the field and forest restoration projects along the edge of the Northwest Woods of Van Cortlandt Park.  Meet in the small field near W. 261st and Broadway.

VCP Trails Hike, including the Old Croton Aqueduct
Sunday April 28th meeting at 11am
Joint Walk with Friends of Old Croton Aqueduct & the Urban Trail Conference. Beginning at the VCP golf clubhouse – moderate walk, approximately 6 miles, can be muddy, portions on the John Muir Trail will be hilly. Please bring food & water.  History, birds, botany, and beauty may be anticipated. We will conclude at the historic 1902 golf clubhouse, where (at your option) you may purchase snacks and cocktails. Meet in either of two locations at 11 am: Meet at the last stop of the 1 train- 242nd Street and Broadway- at bottom of southern stairs on Park side OR meet at the first parking lot (free) of the Van Cortlandt Park golf course. Woodlawn Beautification Volunteer Days
Saturdays  May 4th and June 1st from 10:30am to 1pm
Join the Friends and the Women of Woodlawn as we continue our efforts to beautify the area around Woodlawn Playground. Meet at Van Cortlandt Park East, just south of Kepler Avenue.

Spring Garden Planting Day
Saturday May 11th meeting at 10am
Join us as we prepare and plant our 800 plus square feet of vegetable garden beds for the 2019 growing season.  Volunteers are needed to prepare the beds, sift our compost bins and help plant seedlings.  Meet at the Garden & Compost Site – enter the Park at Broadway and Mosholu Avenue.

Beyond the Brook: Getting to Know Tibbetts
Saturday May 18th meeting at 10am
Over the past three years, the Friends’ have been conducting research and completing stewardship projects to reclaim the Tibbetts Watershed in Van Cortlandt Park.  Get to know Tibbetts Brook, Van Cortlandt Lake and the Wetlands better during this behind the scenes tour with four mini hands-on “workshops” on Wetland Restoration, Daylighting Tibbetts Brook, Macroinvertebrate Studies and Water Quality Monitoring. Space is limited and pre-registration is required for this free event.  Pre-registration required and will be available by late March.

Spring Fundraiser
Tuesday June 11th 
The Friends of Van Cortlandt Park and the Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy are joining together to a Spring Fundraiser on the evening of the New York Philharmonic in Van Cortlandt Park.  More details and ticket info will be available soon.
