Wetland Wednesday: Ecological Restoration

Join Van Cortlandt Park Alliance for Wetland Wednesdays to engage in hands-on wetland conservation efforts in one of New York City’s most vital ecosystems. Each Wednesday, we’ll focus on timely tasks that contribute to the health and biodiversity of Van Cortlandt Park’s wetlands.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

SEASONAL TASKS: February’s planned focus includes:

First half of the month: Putnam Restoration—improving trail appearance and removing invasive species.

Second half of the month: Cutting Phragmites reeds as part of a long-term wetland restoration effort in the Tibbetts Wetland

(Volunteer sessions subject to change to respond to the needs of the park)

– HANDS-ON INVOLVEMENT: Prepare to potentially get a little muddy or wet as you contribute directly to these impactful projects.

– EQUIPMENT PROVIDED: Waders, gloves, and tools are supplied.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Layers or waterproof clothing for colder months.
  • Water bottle and snacks
  • Enthusiasm for environmental restoration!
  • Long sleeves, pants, and shoes you don’t mind potentially getting slightly dirty or wet.
