SUMMARY:Retaining Wall Volunteer Project
DESCRIPTION:We previously had a workshop with the Jolly Rovers and partnered with NYC Parks and a few volunteers to address erosion issue on The Old Croton Aqueduct and John Muir Trail. We encourage everyone to volunteer while VCPA Trail staff finalizes this project. This volunteering opportunity is geared for those who hope to gain advance trail skills. \nVolunteers can join us on the following days starting at 9am: Monday 10/20\, Tuesday 10/21\, Monday 9/27 and Tuesday 10/28 \nRSVP Now. \nTopics covered: \n\nIntroduction and Safety: Briefing on goals\, safety protocols\, and proper tool usage.\nSite Preparation and Excavation: Clearing the area\, leveling the ground\, and digging a trench for the foundation.\nStone Selection and Sorting: Choosing the right rocks for the wall’s base and upper courses\, considering size and shape.\nBuilding the Foundation: Laying the base course\, ensuring proper alignment and compaction.\nConstructing the Wall: Layering rocks\, backfilling with gravel\, and compacting the soil behind the wall.\nDrainage: Incorporating drainage solutions like weep holes or permeable backfill.\nCover Bands and Copes: Applying finishing touches like cover bands or coping stones.\nFinishing Touches: Landscaping around the wall\, and cleaning up.\nTool Talk: Demonstrating tools and discussing on-site examples of dry-laid stone walls.\n\nPlease arrive at the meeting location by 9am and we will walk together to the work site on the Old Croton Aqueduct. \nVolunteers must be 18+ for this project.

DESCRIPTION:Explore Van Cortlandt Park’s ecologically diverse grounds and celebrate a long tradition of birding in the park. We will look for various species of resident and migratory birds and discuss a wide range of avian topics. Each walk will be led by a NYC Bird Alliance (formerly NYC Audubon) guide. \nAdvance registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Help restore the beautiful woodlands of Van Cortlandt Park’s east side with VCPA and Women of Woodlawn by closing a desire line! \nWhat is a Desire line? \nA desire line or social trail is an unauthorized trail that has been opened by repeated communal use and usually shortcuts the authorized trail path.  The closure of unauthorized trails fits into both the purview of the trail stewardship and forest restoration programs in Van Cortlandt Park. It is vital to prevent compaction and ecosystem fragmentation. Desire lines can often be coupled with litter and dumping of trash. \nWhen: \nSaturday October 25th\, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM \n(Please arrive on time – we depart for the worksite by 9:15 AM) \nWhere: \nMeet outside the handball courts at Woodlawn Playground \nMeet by the big tree outside the handball courts \n(Located on the east side of Van Cortlandt Park) \nWhat to Bring: \nLong sleeves\, long pants (denim or canvas recommended)\, and a hat \nSturdy\, closed-toe shoes \nWater bottle and snacks \nSunscreen and bug spray (recommended) \nYour enthusiasm for conservation! \nSpace is limited.
