Please bring water and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather. SUMMARY:Animal Survival During a Northeastern Winter
DESCRIPTION:Join VCPA’s Field Scientist and Research Coordinator\, Alex Byrne\, in a workshop discussing how animals survive winters in Van Cortlandt Park. Water is the most important component of all life in the forest here in the Northeast\, and it’s cycle is drastically altered during winter months. This causes radical changes in an animal’s physiology and behavior in order to match the harsh changes in the environment. Since animals enter hibernation and torpor\, others create a form of antifreeze\, while others continue to move to maintain high body temperatures. This field workshop will engage you in the many different animal behaviors that occur during the winter months in Van Cortlandt Park. DESCRIPTION:Join VCPA’s Restoration and Stewardship Program Director\, John Butler\, in a workshop focused on identification of woody plants in the winter. \n\n\n\n\n\nMost of the trees have now lost their leaves. Leaves can be the main identifier for many people when determining what species a tree may be. Yet there are other ways to identify trees and shrubs not using leaves that you can add to your toolbox. This workshop will teach you the basics of what signature traits to look out for when attempting to identify the species of common trees and shrubs in a northeastern forest. These tips will not just help during the winter\, but year round.
