DESCRIPTION:Hike (or Run or Walk) 26.2 miles in Van Cortlandt Park in 2026! \n\n\n\n\nThe Challenge: \nHike 26.2 miles in Van Cortlandt Park anytime during 2026\, post on social media (@vcpalliance) from the park to spread the word\, and wear your 26.2 in ‘26 Finisher’s Pin with pride once you attain your goal (because you earned it!). \nVCPA will provide you with route options within Van Cortlandt Park\, the third largest park in NYC\, but you pick your method (hike\, run\, stroll\, skip) and you pick when (as long as you complete it all by December 31\, 2026). Van Cortlandt Park\, located in the Northwest Bronx\, has over 20 miles of trails of various levels of difficulty. If any of the suggested trails are too strenuous\, you can substitute as you like. The specific trails do not matter as much as hitting the goal of 26.2 miles. \nRegistration: \nRegister now to receive the list of 9 different trails you can hike and some start-up swag! More details below. \nRegistration closes October 15\, 2026 but the sooner you register\, the more perks you will receive\, and the more time you will have to meet the challenge. \nCost/Proceeds: \nFor only $52 per adult ($26 for those under 18)\, you can participate\, receive swag\, and make a difference in Van Cortlandt Park. You also gain access to exclusive hikes in the park\, led by fabulous (and knowledgeable) VCPA staff. All proceeds support Van Cortlandt Park Alliance’s environmental education\, internship and community stewardship programs. \nThe Swag: \nEvery participant gets a VCPA bag\, VCPA die-cut sticker\, VCP map\, and invitations to exclusive 26.2 in ‘26 guided hikes (optional but will count towards your 26.2 miles). The Tibbetts Meadow is looking glorious with asters\, goldenrod and staghorn sumac that are providing sustenance for the hungry migrant species and our resident birds. \nAnimals are beginning to fatten up ahead of winter\, and since farmers had recently cleaned out their fields under the Harvest Moon\, hunters could easily see the deer and other animals that had come out to root through the remaining scraps. \nMeeting at the Van Cortlandt Nature Center. \nRSVP Now. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of creativity and reflection as we gather at the Enslaved African Burial Ground in Van Cortlandt Park. \nThe event will begin with a moving live performance by musician Juan Usera and The Sambuco Tribe\, setting the tone and making space for remembrance and renewal. Following the music\, Bronx-based artist Tijay Mohammed will lead an interactive chalk art project aptly named “Message to my Ancestors\,” transforming the pathway into a vibrant canvas that honors history and sparks imagination for the future. \nLocal artists will work alongside Tijay Mohammed\, including Adrienne George\, Musah Swallah\, Noel Hefele\, and Yoshiko Mori. \nThis unique gathering blends art\, music\, and community in a powerful act of reimagining\, bringing people together in a shared experience of creativity and remembrance. \nRSVP Now. \nTijay Mohammed’s “Message to my Ancestors” project is sponsored by Bronx Council on the Arts and AnkhLave Arts Alliance\, Inc. \nThe event is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.  \nThis event is part of Van Cortlandt Park Alliance’s REIMAGINING initiative. VCPA invites the community to reimagine the park’s Enslaved African Burial Ground site as a memorial space that fosters long-term healing and restoration. Phase 1 of this project was supported by a generous grant from the Mellon Foundation.  \nJuan Usera is a fourth-generation Bomba practitioner and culture-bearer from Santurce\, Puerto Rico\, a community educator\, researcher\, college professor\, musician\, and performer. He specializes in Puerto Rican and Caribbean music and culture and has over 20 years of experience developing highly engaging cultural activities and arts programs throughout the New York tri-state area. Juan is the founder and director of La Tribu del Juey Sambuco (La Tribu)\, an Afro-Caribbean music and dance ensemble and arts in education company. La Tribu has been featured at Lincoln Center and El Museo del Barrio among many others. He is the recipient of a NYSCA Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grant\, City Parks Foundation grant\, and NYFA City Artists Corps grant among others. \nGhanaian-born artist Tijay Mohammed currently resides in Bronx\, NY. As an artist he has a strong passion for exploring issues that affect community and humanity at large. His work explores the concept of ‘excess’ in the production and consumption of products\, and offers a solution through the integration of materials reuse and up-cycling. Tijay has spearheaded workshops and community-oriented projects for esteemed organizations\, including the Studio Museum Harlem\, Brooklyn Museum\, Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling\, Children’s Museum of Manhattan\, Wallach Art Gallery\, Lehman College\, University of Ghana\, and Pinto Community Centre in Trinidad and Tobago.
