Van Cortlandt Park\, located in the Northwest Bronx\, has over 20 miles of trails of various levels of difficulty. If any of the suggested trails are too strenuous\, you can substitute as you like. DESCRIPTION:Join VCPA’s Restoration and Stewardship Program Director\, John Butler\, in a workshop focused on identification of woody plants in the winter. \n\n\n\n\n\nMost of the trees have now lost their leaves. Leaves can be the main identifier for many people when determining what species a tree may be. Yet there are other ways to identify trees and shrubs not using leaves that you can add to your toolbox. This workshop will teach you the basics of what signature traits to look out for when attempting to identify the species of common trees and shrubs in a northeastern forest. These tips will not just help during the winter\, but year round. DESCRIPTION:The City Nature Challenge is an annual global bioblitz event occurring in 2022 between April 29th and May 2nd. It is a friendly competition to see which city can gather the most observations\, find the most species\, and engage the most people. This collaborative effort gathers important biodiversity data within urban ecosystems. The Van Cortlandt Park Alliance staff will lead you in helping document the biodiversity here in the Bronx. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an enriching hike and forest exploration experience along the Cass Gallagher Trail. Led by Volunteer Coordinator Noel Hefele\, this leisurely walk covers 2-3 miles and offers a fresh look at both native and invasive tree species in our Northwest forest. \nWhat You’ll Learn \n\nUnique characteristics of local trees\nIdentifying native and invasive species\nHidden gems and overlooked details in Van Cortlandt Park\n\nWhat to Bring \n\nSturdy shoes and long pants\nWater\nOptional: Notebook and camera for capturing the scenery and your thoughts\n\nDetails \n\nDate: November 4th\, 2023\nTime: 1 pm – 3 pm\nMeeting Point: VCPA Garden and Compost Site\nThe hike will start at approximately 1:10 pm.\n\nPets\, on leashes\, are welcome! Debbi has a wealth of knowledge about nature that she enjoys sharing with everyone. \nWalk will meet in front of Van Cortlandt Nature Center. \nSpace is limited.\nAdvance Registration is Required. \nWhat to expect in July: \nIn July\, many birds lower their activity level and will be seeking shade as the nesting season wanes for many species. But other birds like the American Goldfinch get a late start\, beginning its nesting in July and August. By that time of year\, milkweed and thistle have started producing their silky fibers that this bird will use to help build their cup-shaped nests which can be found in trees and shrubs. Another reason birds nest late in July is because they produce two or more broods per breeding season. Mourning Doves for example can produce as many as six broods a year. They’ll start nesting as early as late March\, and have their last brood as late as early September. The American Robin as well as the Northern Cardinal are also some of these multi brood bird species. \nLike humans\, birds need to release the heat built up in their bodies from the sun by submerging in water\, usually by bathing or swimming. Also\, their bill may be opened\, and the bare skin on the face\, feet\, and legs allows more heat to release from their bodies\, helping them to cool down . \nJuly is the time to savor the scent of Clethra (sweet pepper bush)\, and delight in the beauty of tall meadow rue\, black cohosh\, Joe-Pye weed\, and woodland sunflowers. Butterflies like the monarch\, tiger and black swallowtails\, red admirals are aloft on the summer breeze. \nWatch for The Full Buck Moon that will rise on Sunday\, July 21. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac\, “The full Moon in July is called the Buck Moon because the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full-growth mode at this time. Bucks shed and regrow their antlers each year\, producing a larger and more impressive set as the years go by.”

Woodland sunflowers\, swamp rose mallow\, ironweed and Joe-Pye are attracting pollinators\, and we hope Jewelweed flowers will bring ruby throated hummingbirds to their nectar. Berries and seeds are ripening to please other avian species. Dragonflies are patrolling the millpond\, and wood ducks are slogging through the water chestnut.

Space is limited. \nWhat to expect in October: \nAutumn arrived right on schedule this year with crisp days and tinges of fall color. The warblers are passing through the park and the raptors are crossing the skies of Van Cortlandt Park. Hummingbirds have been filling up on jewelweed nectar in preparation for their southern migration. The Tibbett Meadow is looking glorious with asters and goldenrod that are providing sustenance for the hungry migrant species and our resident birds. \nCelestial events \nThe Full Hunter’s Moon will reach peak illumination on Monday\, October 6\, and it’s a SUPERMOON. it’s the first of three Supermoons in 2025\, making it the largest and brightest full Moon of the year. Rising low on the horizon\, it will appear bigger\, brighter\, and more golden than any other Moon this year\, casting long\, glowing light across autumn fields\, landscapes\, and evening skies. Gardeners\, photographers\, and stargazers alike will find it a sight to remember. \nAccording to the Almanac\, this full Moon came to be called the full Hunter’s Moon because it signaled the time to go hunting in preparation for the cold winter ahead. Animals are beginning to fatten up ahead of winter\, and since farmers had recently cleaned out their fields under the Harvest Moon\, hunters could easily see the deer and other animals that had come out to root through the remaining scraps (as well as the foxes and wolves that had come out to prey on them).
