SUMMARY:Animal Survival During a Northeastern Winter
DESCRIPTION:Join VCPA’s Field Scientist and Research Coordinator\, Alex Byrne\, in a workshop discussing how animals survive winters in Van Cortlandt Park. Water is the most important component of all life in the forest here in the Northeast\, and it’s cycle is drastically altered during winter months. This causes radical changes in an animal’s physiology and behavior in order to match the harsh changes in the environment. Since animals enter hibernation and torpor\, others create a form of antifreeze\, while others continue to move to maintain high body temperatures. This field workshop will engage you in the many different animal behaviors that occur during the winter months in Van Cortlandt Park.
