The Friends of Van Cortlandt Park are happy to welcome our newest NYC Civic Corp member- Matthew Melore. The NYC Civic Corps, an AmeriCorps program run by NYC Service, unites a diverse group of professionals to serve full-time with partner organizations, working to increase their organizational capacity to engage volunteers and build sustainable volunteer initiatives. The Friends of Van Cortlandt Park are excited to have been selected as a partner site for the 2014-2015 year. Matthew will be joining our current Civic Corp Member, Dominic Lopez, who joined us in September. Both Matthew and Dominic will be with us through the end of June.
In his own words, Matthew would like to introduce himself.
“I am a resident of Whitestone, Queens, and recently graduated college at CUNY Baruch, as a Public Affairs major. I am interested in parks and urban planning and in my spare time I play ping pong, billiards, and strategy games. In the past I have had the pleasure of working with groups like the Trust for Public Land and the Friends of the QueensWay.
I joined the Civic Corps. program to learn more about how NYC community organizations operate and function in the communities that they serve. I was attracted by the chance to volunteer and apply myself to something that would benefit the people that live in the city. To me, community groups are the foundation for change in the United States, since they are the eyes and ears of the people that live in an area.
Growing up in Bayside, I always enjoyed walking in Alley Pond Park with my grandpa after school and I still relish the opportunity to learn and be surprised by nature every time I walk through nature’s front door. I chose to work at the Friends for Van Cortlandt Park as a Civic Corp member to experience the challenges and fun that comes with spreading awareness, events and programs at Van Cortlandt Park.”
