Friends of Van Cortlandt Park’s Top 10 Accomplishments in 2013

Friends of Van Cortlandt Park's Environmental Interns helping out at a SCA Volunteer Day to restore the Cross CountThis year, we expanded our community outreach; partnering with several new groups and continuing to work with old friends. Here are our top 10 accomplishments (in no particular order):

1.) We worked on garden, forest, and trail restoration projects with 1,100 volunteers.

2.) We brought 1,600 students into the park though our Van Cortlandt Adventures Education program;

3.) Our 4th Annual Hike-a-Thon had 98 participants- our largest one yet;

4.) We ran two Youth Operated Fresh Market Stands, at the Amalgamated Houses and at Montefiore Hospital (held in partnership with GrowNYC, providing fresh locally grown produce to the community;

5.) We expanded our compost and garden site so that we were able to donate some 250 pounds of park grown vegetables to the Marble Hill Senior Center;

6.) This summer, we joined the Van Cortlandt House Museum for the first time to co-host a benefit dinner preceding the New York Philharmonic Concert in Van Cortlandt Park;

7.) We hired 16 high school students for our first ever Summer Teen Trails Crew and continued our School Year Environmental Internship held with the Riverdale Neighborhood House;

8.) We secured funding to hire a Seasonal Trails Project Manager in 2014 and 2015;

9.) We partnered with the Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy and the Van Cortlandt Track Club to host a Run for the Trail Series to raise funds to help maintain the Cross Country Course; and,

10.) We planted over 1,000 trees and shrubs, removed numerous invasive plants and restored over 2 miles of hiking trails.

The Friends of Van Cortlandt Park thank you for your support, which has brought us to a happy year’s end.
