Friends of Van Cortlandt Park’s Director of Programs, Sara Kempton, with her Gouverneur Morris Non-formal/Community Educator Award from the Bronx Council for Environmental Quality (BCEQ).

The first award was initiated in 1987 by one of BCEQ’s founders, Helen C. Reel, to honor civic-minded Bronx educators who demonstrate concern for posterity through their efforts to preserve the excellent, enhance the good, and upgrade the mediocre in our beautiful borough. Each year, BCEQ recognizes three individuals who have helped further the quest for a safe, healthy environment in which to work and play in the Bronx:
• BCEQ Founder Helen C. Reel “Keeping it Reel” Formal Educator Award
• Gouverneur Morris Non-formal/Community Educator Award
• BCEQ Founder Theresa Lato Student Award

Sara Kempton was nominated by Friends’ Executive Director, Christina Taylor and was selected for the honor by the BCEQ Education Committee. In the nomination form, Ms. Taylor wrote the following to help secure the award for Sara: “Sara Kempton has played a vital role in increasing the number of people that the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park serve directly through our environmental education and stewardship programs to over 5,000 each year. Ms. Kempton was responsible for moving our Compost Site in the Park into a full fledged garden and compost site and helped to double the amount of space that we had. Now, we have over 800 square feet of vegetable beds and donate over 250 pounds of fresh vegetables and herbs to those in need in the community. Ms. Kempton was also responsible for the development of our Youth Run Farm Stand Internship which is going into its third year and has two locations in high needs communities where we are selling fresh, locally grown produce at affordable prices while offering a unique internship to local youths. In addition, Ms. Kempton runs our Van Cortlandt Adventures programs which provide free hands-on environmental education programs in the park for local school groups. Sara also runs our weeklong Summer Teacher Workshop series where teachers learn how to incorporate environmental education into their lessons while earning P credits. The list goes on. Ms. Kempton is a vital component of the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park and has helped us greatly over the years continue our efforts of Bringing Youth, Community and Nature Together.”

From the Board and the rest of the staff at the Friends: “Sara, thank you for all your hard work and congratulations on receiving this well-deserved award!”
