The Friends of Van Cortlandt Park are happy to announce our September 2015 Friend of the Month- Billy Feerick. Billy has spent the last two summer’s working with the Friends Youth Run Farm Stand Internship- helping customers select and purchase fresh locally grown produce and leading cooking demonstrations to introduce the community to new healthy eating options. Billy always comes to work with a smile on his face and his co-workers and our customers always look forward to seeing him at the farm stand. As Billy begins his Junior year at Xavier High School, he isn’t able to continue the program with us during the fall so we will miss him but are looking forward to seeing him in the Park sometime soon.
How and when did you get involved with the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park?
My brother worked for the trails crew for 2 summers and told me about the Youth Market Internship when I was looking for a summer job last summer. I got the job and enjoyed it so much that I decided to do the same internship this summer.
What is your favorite place in the Park?
My favorite place in the park has to be the cross country trails. I ran on them while on the track team for my high school, and they are a very cool part of the park that I never knew existed.
What is your favorite memory of the Park or event you have participated in?
My favorite event in the park that I have participated in was the canoeing in Van Cortlandt Lake last summer with my family. It was a gorgeous day and I was very lucky to participate in the event.
Parks just completed a Master Plan for the Park, what improvements would you like to see in Van Cortlandt Park in the next 20 years?
In the next 20 years, I would like to see more opportunities for people to interact with and learn about Van Cortlandt Park through more descriptive signs along the trails and information centers.
Although Billy won’t be around, you can still come out and meet our other interns at our two farm stands this fall (the kids usually arrive after school around 3:30pm):
Wednesdays until October 28th from 2:30pm to 7pm at the Train Park at Gale Place & Orloff Avenue.
Thursdays until November 19th from 12pm to 7pm in front of Mosholu Montefiore Community at Gun Hill & Dekalb Ave.
