Each month, the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park staff will nominate one of our many friends as the Friend of the Month. The Friend of the Month will be one of our volunteers, supporters and/or program participants. This is our little way of acknowledging what you all do for us.
It is our pleasure to announce that our first Friend of the Month is Charlene Dubin. Charlene Dubin is a friend who has covered many bases with the Friends: she is a long-time volunteer, Hike-a-Thon participant and fundraiser, FVCP support and has been a seasonal employee.
How and when did you get involved with the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park?
About four years ago, I was looking for something productive to do with my free time. My sister (who volunteered) suggested that I help the Friends with the EcoCrafts in the park for kids. While doing that I found out about their hikes and gardening programs and started participating in those too. I loved everything I did and kept going back.
What is your favorite place in the Park?
Lake and Friends Compost & Garden Site. I can sit around these two places all day.
What is your favorite memory of the Park or event you have participated in?
My favorite memory was the first few garden volunteer day when I stepped up and started answering other volunteer’s questions. I was able to assist them so everyone wasn’t bombarding the the staff in charge of this garden day with questions.
Parks is currently working on a Master Plan for the Park, what improvements would you like to see in Van Cortlandt Park in the next 20 years?
The Park needs more trail markers so that even new hikers to Van Cortlandt Park can find their way around.
