Enzo Ramirez is our Friend of the Month for February 2015. Enzo, in his sophomore year at In Tech Academy, began as a dedicated volunteer in our Garden and Compost site along with his father in the Spring of 2014. He then joined our Summer Trails Crew Internship and then our Fall Youth Run Farm Stand Internship while continuing to come to monthly Trails Crew. Although Enzo’s true passion surrounds engineering, he shows us the promise in our young volunteers through his intelligence and dedication.
How and when did you get involved with the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park?
I got involved with Friends of Van Cortlandt Park near the month of April to May. One day, my father and I were talking about the memories he had when he was little. We, also, talked about doing some volunteering services. After that conversation I went and looked up, “Volunteering at Van Cortlandt Park”. I visited the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park website and signed up for some volunteer dates. After I went to the first one, I loved it and I signed up for more.
What is your favorite place in the Park?
My favorite place in the Park is the Parade Grounds with all of the fields. Although, I like to be with the trees and the animals, I love the open space. It feels like I’m free. Every time I look at the sky I think about how large the world is. Also, I like playing on the fields and meeting new people.
What is your favorite memory of the Park or event you have participated in?
My favorite memory that I’ve had in the Park would be when I go bike riding. There was one time when I was going bike riding with my family and I fell off the bike. It started when we were all riding really fast and got to a steep and bumpy hill. I tried to stop and I fell off to the side. I kept falling down the hill but I stopped myself right before I was going to hit a huge tree that would’ve seriously harmed me. I got up super fast and kept riding. I only had a few scratches but I felt so alive.
Parks just completed a Master Plan for the Park, what improvements would you like to see in Van Cortlandt Park in the next 20 years?
I would like to see more forest restoration. There should be more maintenance teams to help fix the Park as a whole. I think that the lake needs to be cleaned to hold more fish species. I also think that different trees should be planted in the Park to add a better diversity. Overall, the park needs a little work but it is in a good condition now.
