Food Scrap Drop Offs
Tuesdays starting April 5th from 4pm-6pm
We want to use your food scraps to make compost and grow veggies. This location is operated by the NYC Compost Project hosted by The New York Botanical Garden. Amalgamated & Norwood Youthmarkets
Amalgamated- Wednesdays from 2-7pm from July 6th- October 26th at the Train Park at Orloff Ave. and Gale Place
Norwood- Thursdays from 12-7pm from July 7th- November 17th on the Corner of E. Gun Hill Road and DeKalb Ave.
Wednesdays will include healthy cooking demonstrations and hands-on activities for the community including kickboxing lessons from Shape Up NY at 6pm each week. Thursday’s market is being held in partnership with GrowNYC. Both markets will accept Cash, EBT/Credit/Debit, Healthbucks, FreshConnect Bucks, WIC and FMNP checks. Get Active Hiking Series in VCP
Please wear appropriate shoes and bring plenty of water and a snack for the hike. All hikes meet at 10am.September 10th, Northwest Woods Hike meet at FVCP Compost Site (enter the Park at Broadway & Mosholu Ave).November 12th, Family Friendly Hike meet at Woodlawn Playground (VCP East & Kepler Ave.)
Fall Wetland Volunteers Days
Saturday September 10th, October 8th, November 5th meeting at 10am
Did you know there are only 98 acres of freshwater wetlands left in the Bronx and 56 of them are in Van Cortlandt Park? Volunteers will help with native species planting, removal of non-native invasive plants and trash clean up within Tibbetts Wetlands. September date will include a Bio Survey of the wetlands- bring a notepad, pen, binoculars, camera and any field guides you have (we will supply some too). Meet inside the park near the last stop of the 1 train at Broadway and W. 242nd Street.
Fall Kickoff Volunteer Event

Join us as we kickoff a season of volunteering with projects throughout Van Cortlandt Park:
Garden & Compost Site Weeding & Harvesting: Meet at the Garden & Compost Site- enter the Park at Broadway and Mosholu Ave.
Woodlawn Northeast Forest Restoration: Meet at Van Cortlandt Park East and Kepler Avenue.
Wetland Restoration Project: Meet at the Van Cortlandt Nature Center – enter the Park at Broadway and W. 246th Street.
Saturday October 1st from 2pm to 7pm
Hike, Eat, Drink & Celebrate with Friends during our new fun fundraiser for the hiking trails of Van Cortlandt Park. Come see why VCP is Where NYC Hikes. Hikes start at 2pm and the Oktoberfest is from 4-7pm. For more information and to purchase tickets to one or both of the activities visit www.vancortlandt.org. Tickets sold in advance will be discounted online OR Complete this form to purchase tickets by mail. Hikes will start at and Oktoberfest will be held on the grounds of the Van Cortlandt House Museum- enter the Park at Broadway and W. 246th Street.
Canoemobile in VCP
Saturday October 15th, from 12-4pm
Join the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park for a fun afternoon of FREE canoe rides in 24 foot Voyageur Canoes with Wilderness Inquiry on VC Lake along with Wetland Tours and Children’s Activities. Children, 17 and under, must have a parent/guardian present to sign a consent form. Meet us at VC Lake near the Golf House- enter the Park at Van Cortlandt Park South and Bailey Ave.
End of Season Celebration/ Leaf Crunch
Saturday November 19th from 10am to 1pm
Help with our final harvest to prepare the garden and compost bins for the winter through adding collected leaves and food scraps. Call for details about food scrap and leaf donations. Projects suitable for all ages. Volunteers will get a final chance to taste some of the produce from our garden. Held in partnership with the Bronx Compost Project. Meet at FVCP’s Compost Site- enter the Park at Broadway and Mosholu Ave.
Our events are open to the general public. RSVP’s are encouraged for individuals or small groups.
