Beyond the Brook: Our Research & Findings
Monday March 26th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Over the past two years, FVCP has initiated multiple research projects within the borders of Van Cortlandt Park that aide in the management and conservation of the Park’s natural areas. Here’s your chance to learn more during this evening of ecology, environmental engineering and environmental science as we present our work, findings and passion. This event will be held in the Scala Academy Room (Rm 215) of the Leo Engineering Building of Manhattan College at 3825 Corlear Avenue. Pre-register required.
Volunteer Trails Restoration Crew
First Saturdays now to June from 10am to 3pm
Crew Members will work alongside trails professionals, developing skills in various areas of trail construction while improving the trails in Van Cortlandt Park. Projects include building boardwalks, clearing waterbars and drainage swells and installing drainage dips. No prior trails experience is necessary; all training will be offered in an on-the-job format. Interested? Contact email@example.com for more information. Must be 18 years of age to join.
Woodlawn Beautification Volunteer Days
Saturdays April 7th and June 2nd from 10am to 1pm
Join the Friends and the Women of Woodlawn as we continue our efforts to beautify the area around Woodlawn Playground. Meet at Van Cortlandt Park East, just south of Kepler Avenue.
Forestry/ Canopy Gap Volunteer Events
Second Saturdays from April to June from 10am to 1pm
The Friends are partnering with the Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy in 2018 with the support of a NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Urban and Community Forestry Grant to complete forest restoration projects to close canopy gaps in Van Cortlandt Park forests. Urban Environmental Challenge 10K
Sunday April 8th meeting at 10am
Van Cortlandt Track Club presents a real trail race in New York City! Prepare for a rugged, technical trail race in historic Van Cortlandt Park in the heart of the Bronx. In the case of bad weather, the race goes on! Stay for the half-mile children’s race at 11:30 am. Proceeds from the race will go to trail maintenance efforts of the Friends. Beyond the Brook: Getting to Know Tibbetts
Saturday April 21st meeting at 10am
Over the past two years, the Friends’ have been conducting research and completing stewardship projects to reclaim the Tibbetts Watershed in Van Cortlandt Park. Get to know Tibbetts Brook, Van Cortlandt Lake and the Wetlands better during this behind the scenes tour with four mini hands-on “workshops” on Wetland Restoration, Daylighting Tibbetts Brook, Macroinvertebrate Studies and Water Quality Monitoring. Space is limited and pre-registration is required for this free event.
Rain Barrel Giveaway
Saturday April 28th from 9am to 12pm
The Friends are partnering with Bronx Community Board 8, NYC DEP, Senator Klein, Assemblyman Dinowitz and Councilman Cohen to distribute 100 Rain Barrel to NYC residents. Limited Supply of Rain barrels. Reserve in advance to secure one. Location: Garden & Compost Site – enter the Park at Broadway and Mosholu Avenue.
261st Entrance Beautification Day
Saturday May 5th meeting at 10am
Volunteers are needed as we work to improve the entrance to Van Cortlandt Park near W. 261st Street. Projects will include gardening (planting and weeding), clean-up and installing a new trail to allow safer access to trails in the Northwest Woods of Van Cortlandt Park. Meet in the small field near W. 261st and Broadway.
It’s My Parks Day/ Spring Garden Planting Day
Saturday May 12th meeting at 10am
Join us as we prepare and plant our 800 plus square feet of vegetable garden beds for the 2018 growing season. Volunteers are needed to prepare the beds, sift our compost bins and help plant seedlings. Meet at the Garden & Compost Site – enter the Park at Broadway and Mosholu Avenue.
Spring Wetland Volunteers Days
Saturdays May 19th and June 16th meeting at 10am
Did you know there are only 97 acres of freshwater wetlands left in the Bronx and 86 of them are in Van Cortlandt Park? Volunteers will help with native species planting, removal of non-native invasive plants and trash clean up within Tibbetts Wetlands. Meet inside the park near the last stop of the 1 train at Broadway and W. 242nd Street.
Old Croton Aqueduct & Putnam Hike
Saturday June 2nd meeting at 10am
The path leading up to Old Croton Aqueduct Trail was recently reopened allowing us to once again offer this loop hike. Join us for a hike focused on the history and natural areas of the OCA and Putnam Trails. Meet inside the park near the last stop of the 1 train at Broadway and W. 242nd Street.
Annual Spring Fundraiser at the New York Philharmonic
Tuesday June 12th starting at 6pm
Join us on the lawn of the Van Cortlandt House Museum for a light supper and drinks before enjoying VIP seats at the New York Philharmonic Concert in the Park. During the evening’s celebration, the Friends will recognize the contributions of four long time supporters of our mission. Benthic Macroinvertebrate Study
Saturday June 23rd meeting at 10am
As part of a NYS DEC Environmental Justice Community Impact Grant the Friends’ are monitoring the benthic macroinverbrates living in Tibbetts Brook and Van Cortlandt Park on a monthly basis during the warmer months. Here’s your chance to put on a pair of waders, grab a net, get your hands wet and help us collect and identify these creatures. Open to High School Students and Adults only. Meet in front of the Van Cortlandt Park Golf House- enter the Park at Bailey Ave. and Van Cortlandt Park South.
